What is it and what do you use it for?
I have a great five minute video on that
Old school data engineer here and I am now having to transition to docker and yarn to get to our backends.... No more RDBMS IDEs.... Thanks
Don't trust these clowns unless your wanna lose your work. They just suspended service in Russia without any notice. Your country maybe next if Dictator Biden decides he doesn't like it.
Thank you fellow Kyle!!
YOU'RE WELCOME KYLE!
I absolutely had no idea what Docker was but in just a minutes I got a very good overview. Thank you
Glad I could help!
nice
Very good!
hari geaia
I couldn't find any video to dumb it down enough for me to understand. Thank you
So is it running on my server or the cloud?
That depends where "your" server is. If you install docker at home or in the cloud.
Very helpful and great overview. Thank you
My guy...so far so good but I had to slow down the playback speed to .75 because you talk waaay too fast. Not everyone is young, spry, or can absorb new info at a hectic pace.
Oh my god thank you
hey im kyle tooooo
Let's goooo
I think that I understand Docker's concept. But I am unsure if it will serve my needs. I have watched several videos. But most of them get into the weeds, and I am not finding the answers to my concerns. On a new computer, I want to keep it clean from malware, spyware, etc, and keep tracking cookies, etc, from sharing my information. For example, I want to use a browser to do my banking, and also to browse social media, and also to click on links that I cannot be sure are safe. I want each of those activities to be sandboxed. I was going to run each one in a virtual machine. But that would take a lot of resources, and not be as fast as Docker. So can specific applications, like a web browser, be set up in a Docker container, and when run, will not share any information with a browser running in yet another Docker container? Also, can you copy files in and out of a container? For example, if I download a file via my container's web browser, where will that file be saved? Will I be able to copy that saved file to one of my other Docker containers. Lastly, one of the features that I like with virtual machines is to be able to take snapshots. If I should mistakenly do something brainless that makes my virtual machine unstable, I can easily return to my snapshot of when all was well. I can also easily save backup copies of my virtual machine's images. Is all of that doable with Docker containers? I want to keep games segmented, browser sessions segmented, video editing software segmented, Office suites segmented, etc. I want to have each application safe from each other, as well as be able to share files between them when I choose to do so, and take snapshots of bug-free containers. I am looking for confirmation that the above is all designed into Docker, before I struggle to learn Docker. Thank you.
23 terrabytes thats insane!
thx
I was skeptical about watching this due to it's age but my god, I'm glad I did. Thanks for the insight man! EDIT: Just noticed you no longer upload, still subbed anyways on the off chance you might make a few video's in the future :)
I appreciate you! I'm still around but haven't felt Ive had a "winner" video in a while. I'm hopefully cooking up something now
Oh I will give you all a Docker all right. 😂
Thank you!
wow! Only 35 dollars for the price of the mid range full keyboard a product where I should assemble everything myself and own 3d printer to make case for it???
So you've literally never heard of a model car kit?
@@TechSquidTV If only I could be like the cool kids... If only I could understand paying Kickstarter fundraising and then also buying it for 35$. How-to get into playground with the cool kids.. I guess I'll never know.
@@TechSquidTV Octopart there is something magical in that website. A vale of secrets.
@@StefanLanberg it's just a diy kit for fun. If it doesn't look fun to you... That's fair, just move along.
@@TechSquidTV It doesn't look fair for me. It's like selling a snow but at first they will also gather all the funds to assemble it in a box and only if the correct amount of the betters will say they want it they will ship it.
very usefull thanks
whats the song in your intro?
so good!
So, how does this work cross architecture... can I launch a docker made on intel on an arm64?
I got this idea from someone on Twitter too lol
Might have been me! My code is on GitHub if you want it!
@@TechSquidTV It was, I was just giving you grief haha.
Thank you for this! I’m imagining C3PO up in the cloud floating on his Jedi-powered throne. This is exactly what’s needed. Seems like a impossibly-fluent protocol droid to help us all get along.
doesn't the IP address changes though if I'm gonna use it outside home? How does Plex take care of that?
Can anyone explain it to me in a few sentences?
Can you put a docked in a virtualbox?
Absolutely : 👍
It's like your speaking another language to me BUT this sounds like the stuff my son is interested in learning. Would this kind of skill fall under IT Development? What is it called that you do? I'm trying to help him discover how he can start learning this tech world stuff but no idea how to find that since I don't know what it's called. He's homeschooled and I want this to be a topic he learns but what do I even begin searching for? What is this industry called.
❤️ love that you are looking into this for him. IT more focuses on maintenance of assets like laptops and the services employees login to. This would be considered DevOps, you may also be interested in SRE (site reliably engineering), and what I actually am irl is a good old fashioned Software Engineer. He can get into this stuff at home with a relatively cheap computer and have REAL practical home uses for it. Check out my home server video which is an extension of this video to see why you'd use this at home. There's a lot of stuff to know and get into so I would recommend to not worry too much about the specific branch of computer science or even the specific role. Start programming and developing things for fun. Make a video game, host a home media server, make a CLI. Definitely learn Linux! Feel free to join our Discord! Good luck!
@@TechSquidTV Thank you SO much! I appreciate the time you took to help me. It has been 100x more helpful than anything I could find on google. Thank you.
Bad explanation. Talking too fast and using jargon words, e.g. image, before you've explained what they mean first.
Docker isn't for people that don't know what they mean. I would recommend learning the basics first before Docker :). Also, change the playback speed if he's speaking too fast :)
I has a question. If I has a machine learning code lets say for image detection, running with python, and I want to serve it to user, does it mean that i need 1 container for 1 user?
great vid thanks
Do they run slower than it would if it was installed directly on the machine ?
Not at all 👍
I know this video is years old. So if watching it make sure to check latest docs as some image names and the way you have to list things has changed. Awesome video though got me to where I wanted to be. Wordpress installed. Thanks
One question. I am looking for a setup that would hold my backup data with data scrubbing capability. So far, I have my eye on Ubuntu Server with ZFS to avoid issues with data degradation and was wondering it both could cover the same file system. If not, do you have any recommendations on health maintenance setups? The ZFS thing is just what I am looking at right now. Still in the thick of researching.
The goto is pretty much TrueNas which is pretty robust now. I'm about to build a new server on it to replace the one in this video
@@TechSquidTV Just looked it up and OOOOO. Thank you for the tip. I have completely forgotten about TrueNas.
just curious why you called your channel tech squid, do you like squids?
Mostly because all the good names were already taken 😂. But I've since come to like squids as a result of the name.
@@TechSquidTV haha cool! and thanks for your easy to follow explanations. You've earned yourself a new subscriber.
@@blisstonia thank you!
How can I set up a second site if there is only one valid file name?
This is where ports come into play and it's not a unique issue to docker (if I understand your question correctly). Look into serving multiple websites using "nginx" and then specifically nginx with docker compose
I was looking for a video of this type because of a coworker, and I think this perfectly suits what he needs. Thanks for your clear explanation Kyle :D
Thanks for watching!
Good video dude...i tried many server, finaaly i decided using raspberry pi4 B, quad core 8GB RAM, 128GB SDXC class10 for boat system, and 1TB SSD usb,,Fstab auto defaults, using ubuntu server 22.04, with AdGuard Home , PlexMediaServer, Sambashare. ,So now i can put ONline 24/7 nonstop,...take only 12WAtt..whenever have new video, the oldest video can be replace...low cost..little space..less noise..
Nice!
Amazing progress!
Great idea!
Honestly, Docker sounds more like a miracle than a software.
this was excellent
I appreciate it, thank you!
Did you make the SSL video?
That was very informative, thank you.
Thank you!
